Today, SMC employs nearly 350 people with the majority in Waterloo, WI at headquarters which is a 135,000 square ft. plant. SMC operates 3 shifts per day, up to 7 days per week.

Position Summary:

The Assistant Controller, reporting to the Chief Financial Officer/Controller, together with the CFO/Controller is accountable for delivering all accounting and financial support for SMC. S/he will primarily work with a team of 4-6 accounting resources, based in Waterloo, New Berlin and Mexico (China operates as a captive production facility) in preparing financial statements for month-end, quarterly and year-end closings. Outside accounting and audit support is also provided and s/he will assist in the coordination of efforts for a smooth close process to occur. S/he will also provide leadership to an Epicor implementation from an accounting perspective. Ultimately, s/he will begin to provide additional support to the CFO/Controller so that more analysis and accurate forecasting can occur. Experience implementing cost accounting best practices needed. Since growth has been very prominent as of recent and is expected to continue.

S/he, along with the CFO/Controller, are charged with aligning SMC’s financial mechanisms with operations and strategic initiatives outlined in the 5-year plan, which is centered around growth and optimization of EBITDA, partnership, through acquisitions as well as overall operational excellence. S/he will provide financial transparency to allow for the CFO and CEO to implement cost controls geared at profitability and create efficiencies by utilizing strong accounting principles. The role of Assistant Controller is newly created at SMC and has not previously existed. The CFO/Controller has been with SMC for 20+ years.

Essential Responsibilities:

·         Preparing and consolidating financial statements, including hands on management of month-end close

·         Serving as a liaison to external auditors and accounting support

·         Analyzing and reporting cost variances

·         Work with multiple departments and plants; forward looking more interaction with Mexico

·         Establishing and maintaining internal controls

·         Assist in the supervising where needed of accounts receivable, accounts payable and general accounting departments

·         Providing monthly, quarterly and year-end support and analysis; forward looking assist in forecasting

·         Assisting with the budget process where needed; lending insight on process improvements

·         Prepare trial balances and review financial statements

·         Reconcile various accounts

·         Analyze, review and post journal entries

·         Special projects as needed



Travel Responsibilities:

·         Ability to travel globally; currently may need to only travel as little as one time per year to Mexico.

Basic Qualifications:

·         10+ years of business accounting experience; prior hands-on success managing domestic accounting needs for a $50 MM+ manufacturing entity

·         GAAP compliance knowledge

·         Superior use of excel; prior experience with Epicor ERP a strong plus

·         Respect for an established “family” culture

·         Strong personal values

·         High ethics and strong moral compass

·         Humble

·         Strong business acumen preferably within a machine shop environment

·         Strong ability to quickly build rapport

·         Exceptional and transparent communication style that is easily understood by all levels of the organization

·         Excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to interact professionally with a diverse group comprised of executive management, machine operators, and engineers


Desired Experience and Traits:

·         Ability to work effectively with conflicting priorities, under pressure, able to meet deadlines, maintain accuracy, and make timely decisions

·         Extensive experience working in a team-oriented, hands-on, collaborative environment; however, s/he needs to be comfortable being self-motivated with an eye toward best practices, innovation and value

·         Ability to inspire, develop and communicate proven best practices and systems/processes in accounting that align to the business strategy


Educational Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s in Business or Accounting; however, accounting experience in a manufacturing/machining environment is preferred over formal degree(s).
